A Cold and Windy Conditions for the Cockatoo Cup

05th of June 2022

On a chilly and gusty Sunday 5th June, 55 paddlers from all over NSW convened at Drummoyne to compete in race 2 of the 2022 Harbour Series, the Iron Cockatoo Cup.

Hosted by the Pacific Dragons Dragon Boat and Outrigger Canoe Club, the race saw paddlers negotiate challenging winds and chop to circumnavigate Snapper, Spectacle and Cockatoo Islands with a long and more protected stretch under the Iron Cove Bridge and around Rodd Island. Moving between old brickworks and smokestacks, time-worn sandstone facades and rusty dockyards painted in history, there was no time to dwell on past stories from this beautiful course as the competition was ever present and it was fierce.

Nine MWKC members participated and did the club proud, with a few personal bests and standout performances. Congratulations to all members who competed, with special mention to Nicci Vesely who came 1st in the women’s long course overall (14km) and Spencer Richards who came 2nd in the male long course overall.
